- Federal taxes are never tax-deductible, with one exception – you can deduct 50% of your self-employment taxes paid.
- Self-employment tax - (Tax Topic No. 554) is a tax consisting of Social Security (12.4%) and Medicare (2.9%) taxes, primarily for individuals who work for the

- The 50% S/E tax deduction is claimed on Schedule 1, Part II, Line 15, and becomes an "above-the-line-deduction" in computing Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).
- You do NOT need to "itemize deductions" to claim the 50% S/E tax deduction.
